When I first started baking cookies, I was constantly making batches and perfecting the recipes. That left TONS of cookies on the kitchen counter that my husband and I could not eat fast enough.
At the time we lived in Seattle USA, and there were people experiencing homelessness living nearby the library and community centre. My husband recommended we gift them our cookies in little ziploc bags.
So, one weekend we tried. First, we approached a person on the bench and offered him our cookies. He was so surprised but grateful. We ended up having an amazing conversation with him and really spent time to understand his story. Understood he was working during the day, but sleeping outdoors at night. Another person we gave cookies to at a traffic light couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear – he said he hadn’t eaten a cookie in months.
Food is an amazing connector between people and can cultivate really strong conversations with one another, especially those who are vulnerable and experiencing homelessness. That’s why our mission is to build community through food and connections. It’s a small action on our part, but we know it can go a long way.
